Middle/Secondary School and Adult Intervention:
According to the 2003 National Assessment of Educational Progress, 66% of Year 9 cannot read proficiently.
31% do not have the basic reading skills taught in primary education. Similarly alarming statistics further indicate that many middle and
secondary school students would benefit from remediation just as much, if not more, than
primary school students. Intervention at the primary level simply does not reach all the children who need it in time.
Unfortunately, at the secondary level, very little emphasis is placed on phonics and word attack skills, which provide the building blocks for reading comprehension. Yet many middle and
secondary school students lack these vital skills, and so their frustration increases as they are expected to build more and more upon their already shaky foundation.
Most students carry their reading disability into adult life.
The good news is that Lexia software has enabled students of all ages to gain
reading proficiency. Lexia recognizes that improving reading comprehension is directly related to strengthening
basic foundational skills. That’s why Lexia offers an array of products for older students, providing help for everyone from children in
junior schools to adults, some of whom happen to be a grandparents. When it comes to
reading, Lexia can prove that it’s never too late to learn.
