British Dyslexia Association

My students, from 5-16, loved LexiaUK and I am already STRONGLY recommending it to schools. For some dyslexic pupils it proved an invaluable way of attempting to learn specific words and sounds where other methods were proving problematic. It can also work well with CSAs and does not need constant specialist input; another added bonus. For skills and drills, this is very good and it is not derogatory to the user in any way. -- Anita Keates - Retiring Chair, BDA Computer Committee

Primary School Review

We used the program with 34 children in years 3 and 4. We are very happy with it. Their tutor made the following points:

  • The children were extremely motivated
  • Every child enjoyed the program
  • Easy to follow and understand
  • Extremely user friendly - no problems setting it up
  • Excellent graphics - children found them enjoyable
  • Good range of activities in each level
  • Good repetition, so children able to revisit at each level
  • Pupils found the R (repeat) button helpful, to listen again to instructions and sounds

I think its wonderful. -- Teaching Assistant, Primary School, Stockton-on-Tees

Comprehensive School Review

Although I did not have any fears using the Lexia software, after the glowing recommendations from the Norfolk Psychological Service, the software has surpassed our expectations and we have been incredibly impressed by the results over the three years since we started using the program. -- Senco, Acle High School, Norfolk

Psychological Service Review

"...the project involves a group of Year 8 pupils, who were screened and selected using reading and spelling tests and are the lowest achievers in the year group. They have a variety of difficulties including emotional/ behavioural needs in addition to their learning difficulties. They are withdrawn from classes for some sessions per week and work in two groups on a programme of Study Skills and Literacy development programme of which SOS is one component.

The Teacher taking the class is the SENCo and together we have been charting the pupils progression through SOS. We have done pre testing using a standardised reading test and will test the pupils again towards half way through next term which will mean that they will have been using the system for 2 full terms.

They have to date found it motivating and easy to use. In some cases, the pupils have been coming in to use SOS in their own time in addition to their classes! Also some of the pupils have been able to leapfrog up the levels possibly indicating that they have previously been underachieving."
-- Anna James, Computer Aided Learning Co-ordinator, Norfolk Psychological Service.

SENCO and children's comments

I have found the Reading SOS program to be extremely useful in motivating pupils to focus on improving their reading skills. The support, guidance and feedback they get from the multi-media program is superb. Some previously less motivated pupils who struggle with reading tasks have even volunteered to use the program in their own time (at break and lunchtimes)! For me, it has provided a very useful tool in monitoring the progress of about 15 pupils with extreme reading difficulties whose test reading ages are over 5 years below their chronological age. A sample of their responses are below :

Christopher (year 8) :  I am on level 2 and enjoyed Letter Switch the
best. I think it has helped me a lot. I have come in and done some of it
before school starts in the mornings.

Ricky (year 8):  I have nearly done level 1. I like the Short Vowel Key
the best. I think my reading has got better. I have come at breaktime to
try to get a higher score.

Emily (year 8):  I have really liked using the Reading SOS. I am on level
2 now. It has helped me to read bigger books.

Robert (year 10): I am on level 4. I enjoy using it. I've been using it
for about twice a week for 6 weeks. Sometimes I find the accent
difficult to understand, but the instructions are clear. I am more
confident with my reading.
